Stop Celebrating SOPA+PIPA Demise: Stop ACTA!

Not worried about SOPA and PIPA (for now)? Good. Me either. But — we’ve still got concerns…

If you thought everyone on the Internet could now sit back, relax, continuing to bask in the successful demise of SOPA and PIPA (as we knew them), think again. Another similar effort to control the Internet, paired with the underlying premise of protecting personal intellectual privacy has been officially in progress since 2008, and its reach is growing.

International in scope, its tentacles are more far-reaching than SOPA or PIPA ever dreamed of being (initially, as far as we know, anyway). Known as ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement), an international trade agreement currently negotiated by the European Union, United States, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Australia, with a growing list of countries. Similar to the premise of SOPA and PIPA, it was established to enforce copyright issues, and address counterfeited goods, implemented on an global basis through established international standards.

Once again, this is not a political issue, and the United States government participation reaches across the aisle, with both the Bush and Obama administrations’ involvement. In fact, according to research on ACTA, it appears both administrations have chosen to maintain our country’s involvement as “secret” for all these years, citing potential national security risk, if known.

ACTA is so secret in fact, that negotiations have been done undercover, inadvertently outed by some minimal document or detail leakage. Because of the leaks, we do know regulations are being drawn up to be instituted in countries choosing to participate. According to my research, it appears many of the players behind ACTA, and consulted in devising regulations, are similar to those parties who supported SOPA and PIPA.

If you would like to know more about ACTA, here is an informational video:

While many in the United States (I’m guessing) are relatively unfamiliar with ACTA, a “blackout” with Polish websites going dark to protest ACTA is planned, at the time of my writing. Click here to see ABC News report

NOTE: I do not view this issue as political in nature. I see it as related to the issue of free speech and freedom of expression. It is a strikingly similar scenario to SOPA and PIPA, however with more far-reaching implications in scope, due to the global involvement and support.

If you Google “ACTA” you will find breadcrumbs I discovered in my research for this story. All efforts have been made to fully research and present the known information surrounding this issue.

Further, I don’t quite understand the “Stop ACTA” logo, and not sure if that is to be a parody, or a play on the intellectual property issue. My opinion doesn’t really matter, except I do want to go on the record saying I don’t think that visual representation helps the cause or the case. (Exercising my free speech…)

As predicted in my “Top 10 Social Media Watch List” for 2012, ACTA is further evidence of the developing global culture. For sure everyone is affected by such mandates. Through connections made, information communicated and shared, we can help to protect the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and free speech.

Expect to hear more about ACTA.

2012 Communications Style Predicton: Blogs are Back!

27 Dec

Click to Get Biz Tips to Build Your Brand and Your Biz!2012 Communications Style Prediction: Blogs are regaining popularity!

No wonder, content marketing powerhouses they can be: serving as an online business hub, effective communications medium, and a means to incorporate various social media platforms/outposts across the web.

I’ve been blogging since 2004, and have found blogs to be a powerful communication platform, and an effective connecting point. Over the years, I’ve observed folks’ interest wane, in part due to the effort, but also with social media involvement.

Blogging, and incorporating related elements, integrates not only your various media, but also your message — powerful! A blog provides a means to tie all that together, as a hub-and-spoke approach.

For any business person, independent professional or nonprofit, blogging is essential to communicate your message and build your brand, identity or create awareness.

Great news: you don’t need to be a techno-wiz to do this, you don’t need to hire a someone to do set up your site, or to maintain it. Setting up a blog is easy. Functionality is greatly increased and enhanced with all of the plugins and features readily available. You can totally control your own site from establishing your domain, installing your preferred blogging platform, and getting your message out there! It has never been easier! Costs vary, ranging from free to monthly charges depending upon selected platform and web hosting.

My advice: Do you have a blog somewhere you’d like to get started back up with again? Dust it off, update it and get blogging! Do you have an idea in mind that you’d like to share, build on, create community for? Blogging is a great way to accomplish these goals!

Use Video for More Impactful Marketing

02 Nov

A recent conversation around the water cooler sparked a discussion about the impact of using video to communicate your messages.

My friend remarked that being able to virtually look someone in the eye as they’re talking about their product or service, gave a greater sense as to what they’re about.

It is true — video is a powerful medium. By nature of the content-rich presentation in a controlled environment, video is an effective means for providing the impression of a closer, more impactful connection. I’ve had folks tell me they feel that they know me, even though we have not met personally, after viewing my videos, and reading my various writings. As a nonfiction writer, and one known to present in a straightforward manner, I am glad to hear this!

You’ll probably chuckle (as I did, thinking about Seth Godin’s book All Marketers are Liars), when I share with you the video that prompted our discussion, but here it is…

Video marketing is essential to online success, and should be included as part of your marketing strategy. In December, 2010, Forbes released a white paper entitled “Video in the C-Suite” that reported more than 75% of C-Suite Executives surveyed said they watched work-related online video on business-related websites at least weekly. 65% of C-suite Executives report visiting a vendor’s website after watching their online video. I think you’d agree that’s pretty compelling evidence for online video.

You’ve probably heard about the star power of online video for marketing efforts …and by the evidence of video everywhere, we know the use of online video is growing! Are you using video in your marketing and integrating it into social media? OR – are you camera shy? Maybe you’ve tried making a few videos, but could use some pointers to make them more effective.

As you’re here reading this right now, I hardly need to remind you that effectively harnessing the power of the web to communicate your messages is essential. If you’re doing any kind of business on the web, you must embrace the future or risk being left behind. Video is an integral component to branding.

Sometimes video can be frustrating, can’t it?! Have you ever lost hours or even days trying to figure out some frustrating technical issue? Experienced insight, real help and support is often hard to find – I’ve been there, too!

For this reason, I highly recommend Online Videopolis will give you a creative and competitive edge. One of the most comprehensive online video resources I’ve ever seen, will help you stay ahead of the curve and ahead of your competition, because you have easy access to the tools you need to stand out and be seen.
